Mold could shut down city hall

UNION GAP, Wash. -- City officials here may consider closing down City Hall after discovering last week high concentrations of mold in several areas, including the mayor's office.
Fire Chief Chris Jensen said Monday an environmental assessment firm found at least 15,000 spores of stacci botrus taken from a 3-by- 4-inch sample of drywall in Mayor Jim Lemon's office.
The "black mold" can emit toxins, he said. The firm notified Jensen of the test results Friday, and he then sent a memo to Lemon.
Jensen said mold had been a problem off-and-on since last summer, with some employees reporting a foul smell and nausea at one point.
